The One Killer App You Need To Solve Your Top Development Challenges
Last month we began a discussion (some of which happened in our blog comments) about the development challenges you will be focusing on this year. Here’s what you told us were your top 5:
- Accelerating Leadership Development
- Making Connections That Pay Dividends
- Mindful Engagement
- Innovating Ahead
- Thinking Strategically to Think Around Corners
These are big concepts to tackle in any year, but particularly now, when very few of us have the luxury to put aside the day-to-day and give each of these issues single-minded focus, the job ahead can seem almost overwhelming.
A Whole Brain® toolkit provides the “killer app” you need to take on these challenges and make it easier on yourself in the process.
Accelerating Leadership Development
Are your leaders equipped to drive the organization’s future success? According to the Center for Creative Leadership’s recent research on bridging the leadership gap, very few are.
The graphic below illustrates where the critical leadership skills for the future fall along the four quadrants of brain dominance. Get a clear picture of the thinking preferences of your leaders first, then use a Whole Brain® walkaround approach to map out their competencies and build an effective learning and development plan. Refer to the diagram below to get started.
Making Connections That Pay Dividends
Every organization needs to increase customer satisfaction, loyalty, revenues and/or profits. Have you tried improving customer interactions and sales processes using a Whole Brain® point of view?
A number of organizations are, and the dividends are paying off in call centers, marketing initiatives and sales results. Using a Whole Brain® diagnostic and the HBDI® as the starting point, they help people understand their own thinking preferences so they can align their communications with the way their customers prefer to process information.
Start by diagnosing the fit between your sales and customer service teams, your customers, your products and your marketing materials. Want some examples? Call your Herrmann representative for a diagnosis of your website or brochure, and find out about the results other companies have achieved by reviewing the detailed case studies on our website.
Get in touch with us if you have not yet seen the ThinkAbout™ Your Customer module from our Business of Thinking™ series. It will help your organization diagnose and align all aspects of the marketing and sales cycle with a Whole Brain® Thinking approach.
Mindful Engagement
Disengagement is up especially among the most talented employees, according to employee engagement research conducted by the Corporate Executive Board. Hold on to your hi-potentials by:
- Looking at strengths…AND preferences
- Viewing job fit from a Whole Brain® perspective
- Defining performance and career outcomes in a Whole Brain® way
- Using the HBDI® to increase coaching effectiveness
Susan Stone of the Lantern Group offers some additional specific tips for managing and motivating employees in the new economy. Our March 10th THINC™ Webinar will highlight how Right Management is getting results in their coaching practice using the HBDI®. Sign up today.
Innovating Ahead
While innovation gets a lot of press these days, participants in our February THINC™ Webinar told us there are often barriers to innovation in organizations. Some common themes we heard:
- No one will want to hear new ideas.
- It’s difficult to gain buy-in from senior executives.
- It’s too hard to “prove” the value of creativity.
- We don’t know how to do it.
Sound familiar? The root of many of these issues actually lies in brain dominance. Learning how to communicate the value of creative “big ideas” (D quadrant) in an analytical and quantitative way (A quadrant) is often the first step in getting heard and gaining buy-in from senior executives.
If you’re stuck on the process of getting more creative, try using Whole Brain® Thinking as a framework for the “how:”
Thinking Strategically to Think Around Corners
We continue to hear that this is a priority for more and more organizations. In our Whole Brain® Strategic Thinking Workshops, participants find that using a step-by-step, Whole Brain® process helps them get past limiting beliefs, sort through trends, make decisions faster and turn strategic thinking into a habit.
The key is recognizing that Whole Brain® Thinking is a necessity for being more strategic and making desired future outcomes a reality. Helping people understand their thinking preferences first will show them the path to thinking around their own “mental corners.” There are specific techniques you can teach once this foundation has been built.
How will you leverage your knowledge of Whole Brain® Thinking tools and processes to get a head start on these challenges and make it easier on yourself?
For more discussion on these Whole Brain® Thinking “killer apps”, be sure to check out the recording of our February THINC™ Webinar, 5 Essential Applications of Whole Brain® Thinking for Success in 2010.
